It’s not always easy going home. Sweet nostalgia is always tempered by the shock of finding that what we yearned for so long in our absence – a building, a tree, a smell – is no longer where it was. May Chiu’s childhood home still stands but has become a sort of upmarket hotel. The restaurant where her father worked turned into a seafood restaurant, now for sale.
